In 2001 I was physically assaulted in my own home. My back was so bruised that I could hardly stand upright and a black horizontal line highlighted on my skin where each of my vertebrae was. 

As a young 20 something year-old, recently graduated from university, I’d been out drinking with some friends earlier in the evening and had gone home to bed. I don’t remember exactly what happened, but I do remember being in my pj’s in my housemate’s bedroom being hit by her partner.

It was no secret that I didn’t like the woman she was seeing. She was a bully and controlling and I’d made it clear to my housemate that I didn’t want her in the house. Yet here she was standing over me in my own house repeatedly punching me while all I could do was curl over in an attempt to protect myself.

I still don’t know to this day why I was in my housemate’s bedroom or why her partner was there, but I had this feeling in my gut that somehow, I had brought this “fight” on myself.  

I was filled with so much shame that I didn't tell a soul for FIFTEEN YEARS - not even my parents!

Over the next few years, I began developing little nagging problems in my knee, hip and shoulder but despite trying many conventional treatments, my body seemed far too sensitive to cope with any of them and afterwards I always ended up feeling worse than before! 

I’ve always been fit and active my whole life but around 2012, I started noticing that after intense exercise, my body would just shake like I’d had too much caffeine, and it would take ages to settle. 

Gradually, as my work stress increased, this reaction to intense exercise got worse, so I ended up not really training at all. 

It felt like nobody understood what was happening and I felt like I was going to training but not really putting any effort in, which made me miserable.

It's not easy for me to share my story, even now, but I hope it highlights just the kind of deeply personal information our clients DON'T share with us as coaches - either because they don't want to, or because they don't even know that it's relevant, but that is fundamental to our success in training them.
